Successful Fundarising Events
Gracehill & Galgorm Senior Citizens Association
This local community fundraiser was in aid of the ‘Gracehill & Galgorm Senior Citizens Assoc’ who get together and meet once a week to have a good natter and enjoy each others company.
The successful sum of £85 was raised and was added
to their funds. The owners of ‘Galgorm Post Office’- Roberta and John, very kindly agreed to host the fundraiser and display the A3 collection sheet.
Many thanks to all who donated in the local community of Galgorm, Ballymena and to all three local winners.

Gracehill Yearly Village Fair
The historical village of Gracehill, just outside Ballymena, is steeped in history dating back to early 1759. You can visit www.gracehillvillage.org to learn more. Also, conducted tours around the settlement are available by arrangement with
Mrs R Thompson at (028) 2565 1554 or email Rev. Jan Mullin at Jan.Mullin@moravian.org.uk and it is well worth a visit. The village takes part in the ‘European Heritage Day’ every year, on the 2nd Saturday of September. Phone the above tel. number for the details or ask at your local ‘Tourist Board’ office.
The Village Fair is held every year, which is great enjoyment for the ‘small and tall’ members of the community. There are plenty off stalls and games to interest everyone.
Each year my brother – Mark Lester (watercolour artist) – and I donate paintings of the local village. This year our paintings managed to raise the sum of £52, by selling £1 squares.
Painting 1 – The ‘Old Gracehill Primary School’
by Mark Lester
(Watercolour)
Painting 2 – The ‘Moravian Church’
by Louise Lester
(Acrylic)
Both paintings were won by local people and have gone to good homes.
The village fair was a big success and as always was well supported, and we didn’t get wet! |

Cancer of Research (NI)
Ballymena Branch
Ballymena Branch Cancer of Research (NI) will be hosting a big fundraiser at an upcoming event.
I donated one of my class demo paintings to my student (Jack) from my ‘Ballymena Art Class’. Jack then offered to mount and frame the painting, beautifully enhancing my watercolour scene.
I am so pleased that I am able to donate a painting to such a worthy cause and Jack was delighted that a painting he himself saw being painted in my class, will go towards raising funds for his chosen charity.
The successful conclusion to Jack’s story-
Jack says-
“The above Cancer Research (Ballymena Branch) event was held on Friday 19th. September 2008 at The Leighinmohr House Hotel in Ballymena. There was an excellent turnout and the sum of £3848 was raised for the charity.
Ann Widdecombe was in top form and lunch was a great success all round. The draw was also very successful and the painting that Louise kindly donated was won by Mavis Speers, from Ballygarvey Road, Broughshane.
Thanks again Louise for your contribution.”

British Heart Foundation (NI)
This wonderful 5” double ended saw (the ones used to cut down trees!) was donated to me by another of my art class students (Chris). He also has a strong bond with the BHF charity and offered this excellent saw to raise some well needed funds.
At present, as you can see form the photo the painting of the saw is still in the early stages, and I am still a bit undecided as to how to decorate it. These saws are always a great challenge, with their very long, thin design area, but I’ll get there!
We are hoping to find a BHF-NI charity event to raffle this beautiful saw at, so if anyone hears about a local BHF event out there, please give us a shout.
(Local to Co. Antrim)
So also come back & visit us to see the finished saw
and how we get on! |

NI Hospice Care - Coffee Morning
This was a wonderful fun coffee morning held on Wednesday 3rd September in my LLCrafts art studio at Galgorm and it was a chance to come along, drink some hot coffee, have a ‘bickie’ and a ‘good natter’.
The coffee morning was tied in with an ‘Open Day’ for my LLCrafts outlet and all was welcome.
Also on display was a small exhibition of some of my art students framed paintings, which was a great success, and the paintings were the ‘Star Attraction’.
So between coffee, paintings and my craft outlet, the morning just flew in and even though it rained we managed to raise £240.
We also organised a raffle, the first prize of a painted LLCrafts plaque, was won by one of my fantastic art students, May Brush, who was delighted to have won and said “I have never
won anything before”, so I am so glad the plaque went to a happy wee home.
Anybody can hold a coffee morning in aid of ‘NI Hospice Care’ it is so easy and so sociable. So just visit www.nihospicecare.com
Thanking all who supported us, looking forward to our next Coffee Morning, come and join us! |

The ‘Long Run Down’
run by Jonny Steede
My good friend Jonny, who myself and my brother grew up with in Galgorm, Ballymena and played with from we were no age, has just completed a superb charity run, from Belfast to Dublin (175 miles) spread over four days. If this wasn’t a big enough challenge he then followed it by running the Dublin 2008 Marathon. Phew!!!
All this he done in aid of three worthy charities
- Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice
- Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice
- The Samaritians
When interviewed in the lead up to the run, Jonny said “basically, this is a super opportunity to raise money for three great charities.” and his friend and events organiser David Brown agreed “absolutely”.
My brother Mark, recently ran the ‘Snowdon Mountain Race’ in Wales along with Jonny and knew that if anyone could set a new World Record by completing this run – Jonny could!
Jonny hopes to raise £15,000 for his three charities and already he is well on the road to reaching his target. It is very easy to donate to Jonny’s great cause’s online, simply visit www.justgiving.com/longrundown
To help Jonny achieve his target money, he also held a fun ‘Charity Night’, for which I donated a painting as a raffle prize. I was very pleased to be able to contribute to his cause and the night was a huge success.
You can visit - www.thelongrundown.org to read all about the event. Also visit Jonny’s charities -
- www.nihospicecare.com
- www.samaritans.org to give your support.
So, I hope you enjoyed this wee homely story and I just know that Jonny will ‘keep on running’, with Mark hot on his tail!
Well done Jonny!!! |
